Self-Advocate Spotlight: Heather Hancock-Blackburn
At the Down Syndrome Association of Central Oklahoma (DSACO), we believe in amplifying the voices of self-advocates who are making a difference in their communities. Today, we are proud to highlight Heather Hancock-Blackburn—a passionate advocate, dedicated employee, and strong supporter of medical research for individuals with Down syndrome.
Heather works with the Global Down Syndrome Foundation, advocating for increased NIH funding and medical research focused on Down syndrome. For Heather, this mission is deeply personal. “I value my own health and want to stay healthy,” she shares. Her advocacy helps ensure that individuals with Down syndrome have access to the medical advancements and support they deserve.
Beyond her advocacy, Heather’s journey to independence has been empowered by the Global Down Syndrome Foundation’s employment grant, which supports her role at DSACO. This opportunity has allowed her to contribute meaningfully to her community while gaining valuable professional experience. “Because of the Global Down Syndrome Foundation, I am empowered to be independent and to advocate for myself and others like me,” Heather proudly states.
Heather is a shining example of what is possible when self-advocates are given the resources and opportunities to thrive. Her commitment to health, independence, and advocacy inspires those around her.
We are grateful for Heather’s leadership and for the support of organizations like the Global Down Syndrome Foundation in creating a future where individuals with Down syndrome have every opportunity to succeed.
