Meet the Hedler Family: A Story of Strength, Love, and Inclusion

At the Down Syndrome Association of Central Oklahoma (DSACO), we are privileged to share the inspiring stories of the families in our community. Today, we’re shining a light on the Hedlers—a family whose journey embodies strength, resilience, and unwavering love.

From the Air Force to Oklahoma: The Hedler Family’s Journey

Four years ago, the Hedler family relocated to Edmond, Oklahoma, after Mike retired from the Air Force. Since then, they have embraced their new home, enjoying travel, game nights, and magical moments at their favorite destination—Disney! However, the heart of their story is their incredible son, Kellen.

Meet Kellen: The Boy Who Lives

At 11 years old, Kellen is the "extra" the Hedlers never knew they were missing. Born with multiple heart defects and transient myeloproliferative disorder, he has faced significant medical challenges. But through it all, Kellen has displayed extraordinary strength and resilience.

Kellen is more than his diagnoses—he is intelligent, capable, and a fiercely loyal friend. He is also a strong athlete, proving that determination and passion can overcome any obstacle. His nickname, "The Boy Who Lives," is a testament to his courage, perseverance, and the love that surrounds him.

Finding Community and Support at DSACO

For the Hedlers, DSACO has been more than just a resource—it has been a community. Moving to a new state can be challenging, but DSACO provided them with a sense of belonging and connection. Through our programs and events, they have met incredible people who share their passion for inclusion and advocacy.

The Hedlers live by the words of J.K. Rowling: “We do not need magic to change the world. We carry all the power we need inside ourselves already. We have the power to imagine better.” Their commitment to spreading acceptance and inclusion for individuals with Down syndrome is an inspiration to us all.
